How have these beautiful enchanting isles emerged lacing the vast blue sea? Coral Paradise-a tropical fantasy is what awaits you with an unusual, unforgettable and fulfilling holiday experience. Tranquil, palm tree shaded coral islands fringed with smooth silvery sand, stand edging the lagoon with varying hues of blue. The crystal clear water and abundant marine life – watch it yourself. You can swim, suntan, go beachcombing or explore the islands through many walking trails and reefs. The tiny islands hold many surprises and many impossible contrasts- Yes; you are sailing there now.

The islands look like emeralds in the vast expanse of blue sea. Varying hues of turquoise blue translucent water surround them. Coral atolls, the matchless marine environment with myriad colors resulting in complex interaction of animate and inanimate things. Built on ancient volcanic formations is the Lakshadweep (meaning a hundred thousand islands), the tiniest Union Territory of India. It consists of 12 atolls, 3 reefs and 5 submerged banks. The atolls poised on submarine banks, harbors 36 islands having an area of 32 sq. km. Of these, 10 islands are inhabited namely Agatti, Amini, Andrott, Bitra, Chetlat, Kadmat, Kalpeni, Kavaratti, Kiltan and Minicoy. The islands lie about 220 – 440 Kms from the Malabar coast between go and 12° 13′ North Latitude and 71° & 74° East Longitude. Kavaratti is the Administrative Headquarter of the Union Territory.

Each island is fringed by snow-white coral sands, are marked by a huge, shallow, calm lagoon on one side which separate it from incoming swells of the outer sea by the fort wall -reef made of massive coral boulders and live corals. The only coral islands of our country are the result of gradual assimilation of calcium from the water by corals and their turning into reefs.

These islands are linked to the mainland by Ship, Helicopter, Indian Airlines and the mechanized cum sailing wooden vessels. Most essential commodities, except fish and coconut, come from mainland. The chief occupation of the people is fishing, coconut cultivation, sea faring and coir twisting. Tourism is an emerging industry.

The population of this Territory is 51,681 according to 1991 census. Indigenous population consists of 93% Muslims, majority of them belonging to Shaft school of the Sunni sect. Malayalam is spoken in all islands except Minicoy where Mahl is spoken and written in Divehi script. Mahl is spoken in Maldives also.

While the islands have emerged as a unique tourist destination, our motto is low volume high value eco-tourism. Our slogan is enjoy, do not destroy the beauty of the islands. The fragile ecology has to be preserved at all costs and therefore is not to be disturbed.

Organized tourism is of recent origin to Lakshadweep. These islands are basically restricted areas but those who avail the package tours being conducted by SPORTS (Society for Promotion of Nature Tourism & Sports in Lakshadweep) are exempted from entry restriction. At present 3 inhabited islands – Kalpeni, Kavaratti, Minicoy- have been opened for domestic tourists only and

Kadmat, Agatti and Bangaram, are open for international tourists also.

The popular package tour is “Coral Reef” which takes tourists to Kavaratti, Kalpeni and Minicoy for day excursion. In the evening they return to the ship and thus spend 4 nights onboard m. v Tipu Sultan. The order of the islands of visits changes according to the standard voyage schedule of the ship. You get a whole day on each island to spend after disembarking from the ship at around 8.00 AM and lunch is served at tourist complexes. You return to the ship at around 4.30 PM after which it sails to the next island. To and fro travel from island to ship is by special mechanized boats. Staying tourists can visit Kadamat, Kavaratti, Kalpeni and Minicoy, which too have fully furnished resorts.

Pondicherry appears a tiny speck on India’s sprawling eastern coast. A Vedic association glamorizes its past. Sage Agastya is believed to have set up his ashram here in the distant Vedic past. Sanskrit scholarship thrived in Vedapuri, assumed to be the seat of a Sanskrit university in the 9 th century, a couple of centuries after the decline of leaning at Nalanda in Bihar.

A former French colony settled in the 18 th century, Pondicherry is indeed is a beautiful Indian town with traces of French culture still intact and ashram by the sea.
